Rece was scheduled to have his cath/biopsy done on March 16th but because of a strep A infection on his skin, we had to reschedule it for April 29th. When I told him he said, "whew, that's a relief!" He may be relieved but Tony and I have another month to worry. This is the one time every year that we know his coronary arteries look good (tx patients are at risk for a type of coronary artery disease) and he's not rejecting his heart. So, when I found out we were going to have to wait another month, it was kind of a let down. The cath/biopsy are always bitter-sweet for Tony and I. We hate seeing Rece having to go under anesthesia and then the 4-6 hour recovery, but we love to hear the good results afterward (hopefully) and know that his heart is doing good.
So, please keep Rece in your thoughts on April 29th. We really are hoping for good results again this year. As Rece gets older, I get a little more worried. We keep hearing that tx'd hearts are good for about 10-12 years and as Rece gets closer to 10 years old, I start to worry a little more that we may have to go down that road again. I'm hoping that because Rece was so young when he got his, that his may last a lot longer. We really do try to live our lives day by day, but it's impossible to not look ahead a bit. Especially now that Rece is getting older and asking more questions about his heart. It broke my heart to watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition a few weeks ago when they had the little boy in Oklahoma that had a heart transplant. Rece heard the doctor say that little boy would probably need a new heart in 10-12 years. He asked me if that boy had a different kind of heart. I didn't understand what he meant and then he said, "Because his doctor said he would need a new heart in 10-12 years. I won't need that will I?" I answered it as best I could but I think it's time to get some professionals involved that can explain it better than I. I'll be talking to our tx team about addressing this in April or June when we take both boys in for their check-ups.
Thanks for checking in. I know I don't update much anymore, but keep checking in as we'll be at the Transplant Games this summer again. This year, we'll be in MADISON!!!
GO TEAM WISCONSIN!!!
